BioSynergy
The need for renewable energy sources is rapidly growing in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to enhance the security of supply. Biomass is a versatile and abundant resource that can fulfill a substantial share of this growing demand. The BIOSYNERGY project aims to use BIOmass for SYNthesis processes (transportation fuels, platform chemicals) and enERGY production (power, CHP) by application of innovative, fully integrated, synergetic biorefinery concepts, using advanced fractionation and conversion processes, and combining biochemical and thermochemical pathways.

Biorefinery Video presentation.
The presentation (10 minutes) highlights the perspectives of biorefinery for the production of fuels, chemicals, electricity and heat from biomass. Topics covered include: the opportunities and challenges for biomass, biomass processing and biomass derived products, optimal use of biomass through biorefinery, development of cost-competitive biorefinery concepts and the challenges ahead. The presentation also highlights the approach in the Integrated Project BIOSYNERGY, which aims at the development of integral cellulose-ethanol based biorefinery technology. A storyboard pdf of the video presentation can be downloaded here.
Workshop: Technical, economic and environmental projections of biorefinery processes
Thursday, 6 May 2010 (12:50 - 18:10), The goal of the workshop, held as a side event of the 18th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, is to present and discuss the first results of the techno-economic and environmental projections of the biorefinery concepts developed within the Biosynergy project. The workshop agenda is available here. For further info on the workshop location and logistic, visit: http://www.conference-biomass.com/
Biorefinery Course: “ADDING VALUE TO THE SUSTAINABLE UTILISATION OF BIOMASS”, co-funded by the FP6 Integrated project BIOSYNERGY and the IEA Task 42 Biorefineries.
The course addresses the biorefinery concept in its full scope, including: current status & developments, definition & classification, different concepts, and sustainability issues (LCA). The first course took place on 12th June 2009 as a satellite event of the Fifth International Conference on Renewable Resources and Biorefineries (RRB5) in Ghent, Belgium. The presentations are available under publications.
An International Workshop on Biorefinery was organised by Abengoa Bioenergía Nuevas Tecnologías, Genoma España, IDEA and CIEMAT in Madrid on the 22nd June 2009. The workshop comprised working groups addressing various biorefinery aspects from obtaining raw material, with special attention for algae and energy crops, to bio-based products synthesis via biochemical and thermochemical conversion. A round table meeting was included to evaluate incentives for the development of biorefinery business incl. financing of new projects, regulation and sustainability issues. A dedicated session on the IP BIOSYNERGY addressed the main results obtained so far. A workshop report and the presentations are available under publications.
Workshop "ADVANCED BIOREFINERY CONCEPTS AND TECHNOLOGIES".
The Workshop was held as a side event of the 17th European Biomass Conference & Exhibition on the 2nd of July 2009 in Hamburg, Germany. The goal of the Workshop was to present and discuss the project results achieved so far with stakeholders from the public sector, industry and R&D organizations. A report and the presentations are available under publications.
